So it has been quite a while since I last updated this blog. Since I stopped posting I have run an additional 2 ultramarathons (50K's - Way too cool 50K in march 2011 and Skyline 50K once again this past August 2011) and several trail and road marathons. Now I am training to complete my first 50 mile run. I am feeling very strong and capable, but still concerned about covering that much distance in a single day. Race day is November 12 in Sacramento.
Last March, just after my 50K I felt my health go down quicky. I was so lethargic and tired, I felt sick and I was having to take naps almost everyday. This got so bad that I did not attend summer school for fear that I would not be able to manage it. I went to the dr and told him that something was terribly wrong with me and I literally felt like I was dying. In the midst of all of this I was trying to continue to run but I was struggling to say the least.
After looking at my blood work trend over the last 5 years, he noted that my red blood cell count was decreasing while the average size was increasing which is an indication of B12 deficiency. He said that sometimes people's (usually older) digestive systems are unable to absorb this vitamin which is responsible for red blood cell production.
I now take a sublingual (under the tongue) b12 pill everyday and now my health is dramatically improved as well as my energy level. Allowing the tablet to dissolve under the tongue allows the B12 to absorb directly into the bloodstream so that it doesn't have to be absorbed via the digestive system, It certainly helps to have an adequate amount of red blood cells:)
