My husband has nicknamed me the Honey Badger since I ran my 50 mile ultramarathon on November 12 in Sacramento. It was a great experience and I want to do another one but add more difficulty this time. I felt really good (well, as good as could be expected) during the race and never had a moment where I doubted that I could cross the finish line. However, I must admit that the thought of "Am I really going to be able to do this?" crossed my mind several times. As the miles went by and I felt strong, the doubts subsided and I just went along with it.
Since this was my first 50 mile run, I went out at a manageable 10-11 minute pace and basically maintained that for the first 31 - 35 miles. At that point, I slowed down and started taking more breaks as I was getting tired and I had a blister pop up on my little toe. However, I was able to cover it and move forward. I have no idea how I have the energy to do this but I do and it was a wonderful accomplishment.
Having started the race at the break of dawn at 6:30am and crossing the finish line just before 5:15 or so, I was able to do the whole race without having to run in the dark or with a headlamp. My final time was 10 hours and 38 minutes. Very happy for my first 50 mile run!
