It has been a busy week since the race so I am just now getting to write about it. In summary, I had a great day and a great run! The weather could not have been more perfect, I felt good and had no issues during the run. I arrived in plenty of time to get myself ready to go and then we took off! Kim and I stayed together the entire race and both had a great day. Towards the end of the race we were both getting a bit tired (well, it was 31 miles you know) but that was understandable. My hips were feeling a little beaten up by my hydration belt, but otherwise I had no issues during the race at all.
It is amazing what you can train your body to do IF YOU TRAIN, that is. And training, I did! The race was the culmination of about 6 months and over 800 miles of running hills and trails, some very wicked ones at times, weight trainining upper and lower body and core strength in the gym and walking. I even ran a marathon (26.2) as a TRAINING RUN during the season! But I was very well prepared for the race course which included a total gain/loss climb in elevation of about 4,750 feet. We certainly felt it all, but our motto was RFM (relentless forward motion) so we kept moving.
I am so proud to have been a member of the inaugural Ultra marathon team for Team in Training. It was a great time and I am ready to do some more trail running as I am hooked! There were lots of Team in Training supporters and friends out to cheer us on during the race and it was a lot of fun.
My highlight of the day was when I saw Michael and the boys near the finish line. Matthew grabbed my hand and grabbed Kim's hand and we all ran across the finish line together. He was amazed and almost giggling at everyone screaming and yelling for us. I am so glad he got to share in a little bit of my excitement and joy.
Bring on the 50 miler, I say. I am already thinking about which one to do and how to find the time to train for it. I guess now I have to change my subtitle on the blog now as I am no longer on my journey to become an ultramarathoner.:) I am one!
