A "PR"fect weekend

I had a really great weekend. First, it was our first training weekend for the ultramarathon team. We were to run 8-10 miles at Lake Chabot and all of the team except for a few of us did so in the mud and dirt. I didn't run the whole way, I only ran 6 miles, as I was signed up to run the Kaiser Permanente Half Marathon (13.1) miles on Sunday. I was a bit worried as I don't generally (well, almost never) run any sort of distance on consecutive days. Anyway, I put in my 6 miles, met some really great people and teammates and came home to pack up my stuff for a night away with my husband.

We stayed at the race hotel in SF, the Hotel Kabuki, which offered a shuttle to the start line of the race on Sunday morning. This worked out great, as it allowed my hubby to sleep in a bit and I didn't have to bother him with getting me there at the crack of dawn.

I am happy to say that I had a GREAT race. I started out at a generally easy pace for the first mile, but I felt really good so I kicked up my pace. As I was looking at my watch I was amazed that I was maintaining 9 1/2 minute miles or less. At 6.2 miles I was elated to record a personal record for a 10K at approximately 57 minutes. I was wondering if I could continue my pace for another 7 miles - I just kept going and I felt really good. It was a joy and I was estatic to cross the half marathon finish line with my fastest half marathon time EVER at 2:05. I averaged a 9:30 minute per mile. I actually clocked about 3 of the 13 miles at sub 9 minute paces but it all averaged out at 9:30 as I also had a few 9:45 or higher but almost all sub 10 minute miles.

Wow, not too bad for my LAST day ever as a 42 year old! This strength and endurance has to be a direct result of my trail and hill training over the last month. Also, I have been going on very long runs most weekends of 10+ miles, so I am sure that is a major contributing factor too. I will keep it going and I intend to keep working on speed.
