This past weekend the team completed a 17 mile run on the beautiful trails in Redwood Regional park. Just when I think I understand the layout of this park and love it, I end up going on to explore even more new trails there and I love it even more. This weekend's run marked the beginning of some serious longer mileage runs. The marathon team was there as well as the Tri team so we started off hanging out in the parking lot with lots of other runners. At mile 3.75 that is where it ALL changed as the other runners went off in another direction and those of us on the Ultramarathon team went, well let's just say UP, UP, UP and further UP. After passing through Skyline Gate, we headed up a trail I had not encountered before and it was a WICKED climb. That seems to be the only word to describe this particular ascent. Ha, ha. My poor calves and quads were screaming and I was just walking up the thing; however, I survived the up and down and managed to do the total 17 miles with a smile on my face at the end! Of course, we got to experience the usual mud, roots and rocks, but that is what really makes it fun in my opinion!
After this upcoming weekend we will start heading into longer and longer runs of 20+ maxing out at a long run of 28 miles. Whoever thought I would do a marathon+ as a training run? Not me! I am really feeling good and actually for the first time ran over 40 miles within a one weeks time. My right knee is feeling a little sore at times, but I am being careful to ice it and it seems to be hanging in there and not getting worse. I am asking a lot from this 43 year old body and I have continued with my strength training and it is really paying off. My endurance and mileage continues to build on consecutive days and my old little body seems to still be hanging in and taking it head on. Hopefully, this will continue!
